Welcome to the Spring edition of Port Matters,
In this issue, we celebrate significant milestones across several of our ambitious projects, each reinforcing our unwavering commitment to sustainability and innovation. From awarding the major contract to deliver Shore Power to the White Bay Cruise Terminal, to completing the 12-month restoration of the iconic Hornby Lighthouse, and launching our first major rooftop solar panel system in Newcastle, we are making great strides in improving our infrastructure and reducing environmental impact.
We're also excited to share the launch of a state-of-the-art pilot ladder training facility in Port Kembla. This new facility provides maritime professionals and trainees with a safe, hands-on environment to practice scaling ladders on the side of a moving ship.
In other news, we're seeing remarkable growth in the cruise industry, which continues to create jobs and support the tourism and hospitality sectors. This month the Royal Princess, the largest cruise ship ever to dock at Eden Cruise Wharf, marked a new era for the region's cruise industry. At 330 metres long and weighing 142,000 tonnes, the ship is the first to visit Eden following recent NSW Government planning modifications that allow for larger vessels and more frequent visits.
The significant contribution of the cruise industry has also made news with a recent report announcing that the 2023-24 NSW cruise season delivered a record-breaking $4.41 billion in economic impact, a remarkable 60.4% increase from the previous year. While Sydney Harbour remains a premier destination in the Australasian cruise market, regional ports such as Eden and Newcastle are also benefitting from expanded cruise operations.
Thank you for your continued support, and I hope you enjoy reading about our latest news.
