WISTA President's Message

On Thursday 9th of March the WISTA President Dr. Ivonne Ranisch was invited to speak to Young Shipping Australia at the Parliament House in Sydney.

She spoke about women in the maritime industry, a traditionally male dominated industry.

Figures from 2016 show that in the Transport and Warehousing sector in Australia 21.7% of the workforce are women and 78.3% are men.

The International Freight and transport sector however is a significant industry for the Australian economy with a contribution to the GDP of 8.6% or $131.6 billion, as per the Australian Logistics Council.
There are a lot of opportunities for men and women in the sector.

Ivonne spoke about why we need to attract more women to the industry, how we should do that and how to retain them.

She also discussed diversity and how it is good for business and why it is so important for everyone, men women.

Ivonne tries to create an awareness around the difficulties many women face when combining caring and family responsibilities with a career.

Her work as the President of WISTA Australia is part of spreading that message

Annette Sandoval, National Supply Chain Manager at Australia Redcross, moderated the panel through some thought provoking questions. The expert panel discussion offered valuable perspectives on how women can rise to the top and how companies can promote a diverse and inclusive workforce.

WISTA QLD

The Queensland chapter commenced 2017 with a night at the movies on 16th February. Ten WISTA members and friends enjoyed the movie "Hidden Figures," which is the story of a team of African-American women mathematicians who served a vital role in NASA during the early years of the US space program. It was an inspirational movie enjoyed by all; though the choc tops were also thoroughly enjoyed!

The Queensland chapter's next event will take place on 6th April at Interport Cargo Services, which is a full serviced depot servicing mainly the Freight Forwarding and Customs Brokerage Industry. Interport has a 13,000m2 facility in the port precinct which is bond licensed, AQIS accredited, has 2 washpads, and warehouse solutions. Warehousing is a very important part of the supply chain and this tour will provide an insight into the behind the scenes of how it all works.

WISTA NSW

Art Evening at Clyde & Co.

On Feburary 15th, NSW members enjoyed a night of art at the new Clyde & Co offices.

Ian Ackerman, Lloyds List Australia reported:

"THE Women's International Shipping & Trading Association (WISTA) put together a charming show of artist Karen Bloomfield's maritime exhibition called Juggernaut.
As people meandered into the event, overlooking the forest of buildings that is the Sydney CBD, they circulated between the paintings and the snacks and drinks spread, chatting about the art and business.
The subject of the paintings was Port Botany. Each one depicted a tiny portion of a very large scene – a worker climbing on an endless stack of containers, a section of the side of a ship, almost abstract lights on gantry cranes.
One thing you notice when looking at them is the paintings' size. They're big even though they mostly show a small scene.
Artist Karen Bloomfield took the reference photographs for the series of paintings over six hours at Port Botany – four hours as twilight turned to night and then two hours at dawn. She came back with more than 600 reference photographs, which resulted in the Juggernaut series."

WISTA VIC

The Victorian chapter kicked off 2017 with a networking cocktail evening on 2 March 2017 at Bohemian Bar in South Wharf.  This was also a fantastic opportunity to welcome WISTA President Ivonne Ranisch back to Melbourne who recently relocated from Sydney with Rohlig Australia. Rohlig generously sponsored the event in Ivonne's honour.

On 11 March 2017, we held our first social event of the year which was a day at the Melbourne Food and Wine Festival – Flemington Grazing Trail & Cellar Door. The ladies enjoyed the races and the food and wine on offer.

By popular demand we are pleased to announce that first business skills workshop for the year will be a public speaking workshop.  This will be a half day workshop designed to get you more confident with speaking up in meetings, speaking with your clients and reporting to senior management.  The workshop will be presented by Sarah Denholm who is a public speaking coach.  After years of struggling with performance and public speaking anxiety as a concert pianist, Sarah has learned what's needed to prepare and perform at your best in front of an audience.  This is will be held on Wednesday 5th April 1:30pm. Spots are limited to 20 people so don't delay in RSVP-ing.

WISTA WA

WISTA Australia's WA Chapter continues to implement a lively and popular program of events creating educational and networking and opportunities.

An informal autumn sundowner at the riverside home of the WA Chapter's President, Ainslie de Vos has been scheduled for 31 March. It has been widely advertised to members and others interested in participating in WISTA activities.

This follows WISTA's pre-Christmas sundowner jointly hosted with Lavan on the 20th floor of the firm's premises overlooking Perth's Elizabeth Quay and the Swan River.

Fremantle Ports' Harbour Master, Captain Allan Gray gave an informative and entertaining talk as guest speaker at this well attended event.  His insightful account of his role at Fremantle Ports and how it responds to shipping trends, the regulatory environment and other changes that affect the maritime sector was received with much interest by those present.

A senior representative of the Australian Maritime College will be the guest speaker at a breakfast planned for late May.  More details soon on this educational event which will be hosted by Fremantle Ports at its administrative headquarters on Victoria Quay.

WA sponsors for WISTA Australia events are the Mediterranean Shipping Company (MSC), Fremantle Ports and Lavan.

WISTA Membership benefits

Membership of WISTA Australia offers benefits in the form of local networking and educational opportunities as well as access to the full Australian and international membership contacts. This means you have access to an extensive range of contacts locally and internationally that can provide an opportunity to enhance and promote your personal and business objectives as well as raise the profile of your organisation. The networking opportunities that exist through women in the industry are complementary to the traditional networks within shipping and trade, and as such, this forum can produce alternative contacts and opportunities.

WISTA Australia encourages contacts be sought and made through the membership base. We support the network to be a 'safe' venue for questions and support and members are encouraged to freely share knowledge and insights
