DCN - Concerns swirl around Qube's proposed acquisition of MCS
"The competition environment in the industry is changing. We are seeing major merger and acquisition activity amongst the shipping lines and the stevedores are becoming more and more powerful, particularly as they grow their logistics businesses to complement their stevedoring operations."

Unlocking value across the container logistics supply chain
Transport inefficiencies that start at the terminal gate have a flow-on effect right across the container logistics supply chain, trapping value and depressing profitability for all involved.
But it doesn't have to be this way.
Connecting the community of container depots and terminals, cargo owners, shipping lines, and road transporters, Containerchain solutions support synchronised communication and operational predictability.
Features include real-time paperless tracking, frictionless information exchange, process automation, and optimised asset utilisation - as well as total container movement visibility for more proactive planning. The result is lowered cost of operations and improved profitability for one of the world's most essential industries.

Weekly Market Commentary
US markets are experiencing a Government Sutdown so the bull run was put on hold. Politicians cannot seem to agree, even on a temporary fix, called a Continuous Resolution. The Government should be going through the budget process deliberatively and within time constraints. Politics is acrimonious. This happens all to often and 'crying wolf' is driving the story. The coming week is full of economic data releases, globally, although much attention will be paid to the Central Bank actions. The Bank of Japan and the ECB will both make important rate decisions, although no moves are expected, but rhetoric may change. Early indications are that the ECB and BoJ are likely to reduce QE and return to a more normalised monetary policy. The EUR trades 1.2250, while the Yen begins the week around 110.50. Commodity currencies have been major beneficiaries of the booming global economic sentiment and demand. The AUD closed the week above 0.8000, while the NZD slipped below 0.7300, off highs. Bullish sentiment is set to continue. The US Government shutdown will consume markets until a resolution can be negotiated. ...

Is it appropriate to tax imports where we have no industry to protect?
by Russell Wiese - Hunt & Hunt Lawyers
There is no policy justification of the retention of the 5% customs tariff. In fact, it goes against existing policy. Australia has a system of allowing importers to obtain an exemption from paying customs tariffs on imports when it can demonstrate that there are no Australian manufacturers producing substitutable goods. These exemptions are called tariff concession orders. However, regulation is in place prohibiting the making of tariff concession orders for passenger motor vehicles. This prohibition is left over from time when there was an established Australian passenger motor vehicle industry ...
