We are off to the Nation's Capital

Another big week ahead in Canberra including meetings with the Department of Infrastructure and Regional Development, the Department of Immigration and Border Protection, the Hon Darren Chester MP and the Commonwealth Ombudsman.

Why the Ombudsman?

As a part of the Freight & Trade Alliance (FTA) and Australian Peak Shippers Association (APSA) combined submission to the Federal Inquiry into Freight & Supply Chain Priorities, it was recommended that import border hold processes be reviewed in line with the following recommendations :

  • Container Examination Facility (CEF) targeted containers have storage arrangements prescribed in Melbourne, Brisbane and Fremantle ports to meet the extended storage benchmark established in Sydney under the Port Botany Landside Improvement Strategy (PBLIS) Mandatory Standards; and

  • extended container detention periods be provided by shipping lines whereby cargo has been reported in terms of statutory requirements with evidence that delayed release from the stevedore is due to CEF intervention.

FTA / APSA have escalated concerns beyond a departmental level and are meeting with the Commonwealth Ombudsman's office in Canberra later today, 19 September 2017 on issues relating to border compliance of containerised sea cargo.

For further background please also refer to the following commentary and operational notice.

We need your Feedback

Please share any information, views or examples that will assist the investigation on how regulatory powers are being exercised at the border and how it impacts on the supply chain - please send your feedback to pzalai@FTAlliance.com.au

Unlocking value across the container logistics supply chain

Transport inefficiencies that start at the terminal gate have a flow-on effect right across the container logistics supply chain, trapping value and depressing profitability for all involved.

But it doesn't have to be this way.

Connecting the community of container depots and terminals, cargo owners, shipping lines, and road transporters, Containerchain solutions support synchronised communication and operational predictability.

Features include real-time paperless tracking, frictionless information exchange, process automation, and optimised asset utilisation - as well as total container movement visibility for more proactive planning. The result is lowered cost of operations and improved profitability for one of the world's most essential industries.

WEEKLY REPORT

Geo-Political threats dampened markets to close a very bullish week of trade. North Korea fired another ballistic missile over Japan and yet another terrorist attack on Britain. Equities drifted after a strong week of gains. The GBP continued to out-perform, pushing up to 1.3570, with rising expectations of a rate rise from the Bank of England. The Yen traded 110.80, while the EUR held 1.1900, despite soft economic data. In the US Sentiment slipped, as did the important Empire State Manufacturing, awaiting another big week. The coming week will be headlined by the FOMC rate decision, along with a stream of housing and PMI data from Europe and the US. Commodity currencies will begin the week under pressure, with the AUD falling below 0.8000, while the NZD is consumed by polls leading up to the General Election ... read more

Lloyds List Australia: Is 2017 the year that Australia lost control of its supply chain costs?

by Travis Brooks-Garrett - FTA / APSA

Importers, exporters and freight forwarders don't know much about Part X of the Competition and Consumer Act because everything has run smoothly for so long- freight rates were low and we have enjoyed an endless summer of capacity. Shipping lines understand Part X because their ability to share vessels, share equipment, form conferences, etc., depends on it. For shippers and forwarders, I say this: get your head around it. It is the only protection enshrined in law that you have in a market where the number of shipping lines is shrinking ... read more
