| FTA / APSA Executive Forum
APSA and FTA are hosting the NSW Intermodal Forum NEXT WEEK on 15 August 2017- sponsored by NSW Ports and CBRE.
Freight forwarders, customs brokers and transport operators are increasingly looking at alternatives to the Mascot, Botany and surrounding suburbs as residential development takes over a zone that was once the commercial hub of international trade. Importers and exporters are also looking at manufacturing, staging, warehousing and distribution centres. As a result, our intermodal event is attracting registrations from executives from across our combined membership. This event will provide you details of latest developments, an opportunity to contribute to the agenda and a great opportunity for networking with many of industry's leaders. Confirmed speakers to date include Mick Cronin (NSW Ports), Maurice James (Qube), Mike O'Neil (CBRE), Andrew Adam (Pacific National), Greg Baker (Aurizon Intermodal), Mark Hulme (DP World Logistics Australia) and James Wright (MCS). We encourage you to register for this important event and to share details with colleagues and clients – click HERE |

Global Finance Report A quiet start to the week with no major global economic data releases. St Louis Fed President Bullard, suggested no rate rises are needed, although he has been dovish in sentiment so there was little impact on his commentary. German Industrial Production contracted 1.1%, while the currency markets remained steady, with the EUR below 1.1800. The GBP has undergone recent weakness, due to warnings from the Bank of England, but holds 1.3000. Australian Job Ads rose 1.5% but the atmosphere was soft, with the AUD slipping back towards 0.7900, while the NZD dropped below 0.7350. The RBNZ inflation expectations are low, having missed all recent predictions, in the lead up to Thursdays Monetary Policy Statement. The local currency remains under pressure and inflation is a reflection of a softer pre-election economy.

It was brought to our attention that this week's TC Gazette has requested industry to report revenue evasion with a focus on Tariff Concession Orders "If you have information about duty evasion related to Tariff Concession Orders (TCO), you can report your concerns to Border Watch at https://www.border.gov.au/borderwatch Try to provide as much detail as you can so we are able to fully assess the information provided. Examples of concern might include:Goods that claim a TCO but do not match the TCO description;Goods that claim a TCO but do not match the TCO classification;Incorrect information provided to the Comptroller-General on an application related to a Tariff Concession Order;Undervaluation of goods claiming a TCO;Incorrect volumes of goods claiming a TCO.
If you are aware of duty evasion in other programmes administered by the Australian Border Force, you can also report your concerns. You know your environment. If it doesn't seem right, report it. Paul Zalai - FTA / APSA

The Department of Agriculture and Water Resources recently released Import Industry Advice Notice 71/2017 - Timber and timber products BICON case: changes to import conditions for manufactured wooden articles (refer below link). Although there are some benefits in the changes, industry has concerns regarding the requirement for an additional suppliers declaration for wooden articles that have undergone the approved fumigation/treatment within twenty one (21) days prior to sailing. On behalf of its members the Freight and Trade Alliance (FTA) has raised this specific concern to the Department during the recent Department of Agriculture and Water Resources Cargo Consultative Committee (DCCC) meeting held in Melbourne and have requested further information and clarification to better understand why wooden articles fumigated within 21 days of sailing require an additional suppliers declaration. Freight & Trade Alliance (FTA) will provide further information once we receive clarification from the Department as to the reasons behind this change in policy. Tony Nikro - FTA / APSA
